math-o-rama 2007

We were fortunate enough today to dine with the SC math department, which is quite a sizable posse! Robert, Shereen, Kari Potter, Kerri Martinez, Patty Mitchell (who is in fact married to Mr. Mitchell!!! just not Trent), Sarah, Virginia, and Stephanie, what a crew!!! Unfortunately Trent's 8th grade Algebra teacher Marilyn Leverson could not make it, but Trent just finished the extra credit problem she assigned in 1988 and is eager to show the results during our next lunch date.

The math department dines in the staff lounge, and for good reason, there are more microwaves in this room that chairs!!!! And while we ate, in an amazing display of mathematical genius, Robert Mann solved out a relative coefficient equation which allows him to remove coffee stains from his shirt while teaching Math Analysis! What a genius!!!

Our lunch was also enlightened by a generous offer from one member of the math department (or at least an observer of said department) to come dine in her fine establishment on Capital Hill (1221 Pike St) and share in some free fine malty yet hoppy Pumpkin flavored beverages, what a deal!!!! If this was an attempt to try and make a couple of lifelong friends, IT WORKED! She truly found the way into our hearts!

Lunch with the Counselors!

Today we had lunch with Linda, Jenny, Lisa, Jill, and Chelsea from the counseling department. The counseling department eats in a large conference room with a one-to-one couch to person ratio. They were nice enough to import an extra couch for Brian and I (File>Import>Couch).
Lunch with the counselors was very touchy feely. Inspirational music played in the background and we answered a great many emotional questions. By the end of lunch I think I figured out my fear of broccoli and how it related to my upbringing, and Brian is no longer mad at his brother. Thank you counselors!
What did we learn? Well Jenny does not have a TV at her house but she just watched the first season of Welcome Back Kotter on DVD. She was able to quote the show verbatim and she is going to host a DVD party next week! We also found out that I (Trent) went to High School with Chelsea and she remembers me as the Class Spirit Enthusiast (she actually used a different term, but I prefer this more politically correct label).
The counselors really have quite a bit of fun at lunch and we even learned a couple of new words that would have given the lunch at least a PG-13 rating. Now that’s entertainment.
Thanks for having us. Next week we travel to the staff lounge where the Math crew promises a full-on luau.

Lunch With the Science Crew

This week on our journey around Shorecrest we visited the Science Department. When you walk into the science faculty lounge (hidden in the Shorecrest basement) you can't help but notice all of the steam, flames, and smells from various science projects. These teachers conduct experiments during non-duty lunch! In fact, we had to beg the crew to take off their lab coats just to eat lunch with us.
So what did we learn? First off, the 23rd of October is National Mole Day. No, they are not celebrating the critters that live beneath my yard. This day celebrates something about the Periodic Table of Elements. Secondly, we learned that there was less AC dancing at this year's Homecoming dance compared to past dances. If you need to know what AC stands for please ask Josie. And finally, "Smile For Kyle" is a great campaign slogan if you are twelve, but it doesn't quite cut it in the adult world.
Did we enjoy our visit? Absolutely. They even hinted we may even get invited back. So we've got that going for us, which is nice.

Lunch in the J-Hall...

This was our first of many outings this year and what a blast! Thanks to all the English and SS folks who allowed us to crash their lunch time party and even provided home made cookies! Conversation was lively and camaraderie was grand. We hope the rest of the year is full of fun Tuesday gatherings like this. Please enjoy the images of the J-Hall crew and we can not wait to eat with each of you!
